28No image URL.Steamboats.; Steamboat lines.; Ocean travel.; Passenger ships.; Emigration and immigration.; Cruise ships.Collection of steamship ephemera including menus, postcards, programs, letters, photographs, cabin plans, passenger lists, brochures, etc. The collection also includes clippings, mostly from professional travel journals, and other informational documents created by Herbert Beazley, that provide valuable, detailed information on steamship and cruising companies and the vessels they own. The material is fairly comprehensive in its coverage of Europe, North America, Australia and Japan, while providing selective information from other parts of the globe. Some information about holding companies, steamship and cruise line company finance and organization is apparent in the collection, though those subjects are not the main focus of Beazley's collecting interest. While nearly all of the most famous passenger steamers in history are reqpresented here, there are in the archival materials no examples from voyages of historical import -- there is no ephemera received aboard Andrea Doria or Lusitania's last voyages, for example, nor from the hijacking of Achille Lauro, nor from Titanic. Instead, Beazley appears to have chosen to create something more encyclopedic and therefore perhaps more useful to the researcher. The artistic merit of the collection's ephemera from the Golden Age of ocean liner travel makes it equally interesting for display purposes.MS0528
29No image URL.Temporary exhibit in the museum library drawing on the Herbert M. Beazley Collection of Ocean Liner Ephemera (MS 0528) , augmented by three dimensional items from the Beazley collection. Guest curated by Alexandra McKay. This exhibition features items from the Herbert M. Beazley Ocean Liner Ephemera Collection. Curated by Alexandra McKay, a current CNU student and Mariners’ Library intern. In 2011 and 2012, The Mariners’ Museum Library acquired the Herbert M. Beazley Ocean Liner Ephemera Collection from Norma Beazley in memory of her late husband. Consisting of over 20,000 archival items, the collection contains menus, postcards, programs, letters, photographs, cabin plans, passenger lists, brochures and more from the years 1880-2010. The collection spans not only the golden age of the passenger liner, but also the industry’s transition into the age of transoceanic airplane travel. Represented within the Beazley Collection are famous steamship companies, such as Cunard, Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (the French Line) and the Hamburg American Line. Lesser known steamship lines and the ships that sailed for them are also represented in the collection.EX83
